Wet weather doesn’t dampen runners spirits

All 9 Sussex School Games regions came together at Hickstead on Saturday morning to compete in the county primary schools cross country final.

The competition took place before the Brooks League event in somewhat inclement weather conditions. The course was very heavy going and thus very challenging for the young competitors.

The runners, aged 9 – 11 had all qualified from thousands that had taken part in school, cluster and region cross country events across Sussex. Despite the difficult conditions the runners showed great determination and character.

As with all School Games events an Olympic style presentation was held at the finish in which gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams and individuals.

The results were as follow:

1st: Eleanor Strevens (North Wealden)
2nd: River Keller (Brighton & Hove)
3rd: Alicia Mcleod (Crawley)

1st: Jonas Judah (Hastings & Rother)
2nd: Will Matthews (Brighton & Hove)
3rd: Kofi Obeng (Brighton & Hove)

Girls Teams:
1st: Brighton & Hove
2nd: Mid Sussex
3rd: North Wealden

Boys Team:
1st: Brighton & Hove
2nd: North Wealden3rd: Mid Sussex

Congratulations to all of the participants. Our thanks go to everybody who made the event a huge success, particularly the Brooks League athletics officials for setting out the course and their superb marshalling.
