It May Take Our Shoes, But It Will Never Take Our Medals! Brave Runners Defeat The Mud

cross country 2

Around 210 year 5 and 6 runners turned up to Bexhill Downs on Saturday 1st March to compete in the Sainsbury’s School Games in Sussex Cross Country finals.

The SGO’s rain dances paid off, and runners caught a rare glimpse of the sun and they set off to tackle the muddy course.

107 runners completed the boys’ event, although some losing shoes to the mud along the way. However the effort paid off for Edward Armitage from St Johns Meed School,  representing the South Downs Area, who went home with a gold medal. Tom Ridley (Southern Area) finished 2nd  and Ben Aubery from Mid Sussex, who were the area winners of the team event, finished 3rd.

In the girls’ event 104 girls finished; and the winner was Bethany Cook from Thomas A Beckett School (South Downs). Charlotte Bullard from West Sussex West finished in 2nd place with Rachel Shard coming 3rd from the Brighton & Hove area. The girls’ team winner was the Brighton & Hove area.

Congratulations to all of the participants whose effort and determination was fantastic. Thank you to everybody who made the event a huge success, particularly Hastings Athletics Club for marshalling and marking the course.
