On Wednesday 10 July young athletes from across the county will travel to K2, Crawley to compete in the Sainsbury’s School Games Summer Festival. Around 800 participants will represent their area in athletics, stoolball, golf, netball, cricket, gymnastics and table tennis. Billed as a mini-Olympics, the day will include an opening ceremony and closing medal ceremonies, and visits from some very special guests.
London 2012 athlete Abi Oyepitan will be in attendance alongside Paralympic swimming legend Sascha Kindred, and Olympic gold-medallist Darren Campbell.
The Summer Festival is part of a much bigger programme. Every school in Sussex has the opportunity to take part in level 1 intra-school competition and level 2 inter-school competitions run by their local School Games Organisers. From here they can qualify for the level 3 county-wide festivals. The Summer Festival is the third and final level 3 festival of 2013. The Winter Festival, held at Lancing College in March, was followed by the Parallel Youth Games last month, which hosted three Sainsbury’s School Games disability events.
